Why cedar greys, and why its finishes fail

Greying is not the only way cedar fails, and telling the modes apart matters. Dark, blotchy streaks that run down from ledges and under eaves are usually mildew and algae feeding on a damp, shaded surface, not UV silvering. Why pressure washing and sanding fall short on cedar

The instinct with grey cedar is to hit it with a pressure washer, and it is the wrong instinct. Cedar is soft, and a pressure washer strong enough to lift weathered fibre and old stain is also strong enough to carve into the wood. It erodes the soft spring growth faster than the hard grain, leaving a furrowed, uneven surface, and it raises and fuzzes the grain so the boards dry rough and hairy. Worse, it drives a large volume of water deep into the cedar, and in our climate that trapped moisture is slow to leave and quick to feed the very mildew you were trying to remove.

Sanding brings its own problems. On a flat test panel it works, but a house is not a flat panel. Sanding lap siding, board-and-batten, shakes, and profiled trim is slow, dusty work, and it is easy to cut through the soft surface unevenly, round over crisp edges, and leave swirl marks and flat spots that telegraph straight through the new finish. Neither method deals honestly with what cedar needs, which is the failed surface removed evenly and gently, with the grain left intact.

On a soft, open-grained wood like cedar, the abrasive you choose matters as much as the pressure you run. The goal is a medium that removes the finish and the weathered layer while treating the grain kindly, which rules out the hard, angular media used to cut rust off steel.
