This guide walks through the media we use, what each one is suited to, and why choosing correctly is the single most important judgement in the work.
What media actually does
Blasting works by throwing a stream of particles at a surface so their impact knocks off whatever is on it, rust, paint, coatings, or contamination. What gets removed, how quickly, and what the surface looks like afterward all depend on the particle: how hard it is, what shape it is, and how big it is. The operator controls the pressure and the angle, but the media sets the character of the work. The same machine, pointed at the same wall, will cut deeply or clean gently depending only on what is loaded into it.
That is why media selection is not a technical footnote. It is the decision that determines whether a job is a restoration or an accident, and it is made before the trigger is ever pulled.
Hardness and profile, the two variables that matter
Two properties of a media decide most of its behaviour. The first is hardness: a media harder than the surface will cut into it, while a media softer than the surface will clean what is on top without touching the substrate. The second is shape: angular particles bite and leave a profile, while rounded particles are gentler and leave less texture. Put together, these determine whether the work merely cleans a surface or leaves it with an anchor pattern for a coating to grip, the substrate profile that proper coating preparation depends on. Choosing media is really choosing where on the spectrum from gentle cleaning to aggressive profiling a job needs to sit.
Crushed glass
Recycled crushed glass is the silica-free workhorse for a great deal of our work. It is angular enough to cut paint, rust, and coatings from steel and concrete, light enough to be relatively gentle, and low in embedment, meaning it does not lodge in the surface the way some media can. Because it is made from recycled bottle glass and contains no free silica, it is a cleaner, safer choice than the silica sand that gives traditional sandblasting its hazard. For a wide range of metal and masonry jobs it is the default, with the pressure adjusted to suit.
Garnet
Garnet is a hard, dense, naturally angular mineral, and it is the choice when steel needs an aggressive, well-defined profile, on tanks, structural steel, and heavy industrial work. It cuts quickly, leaves a consistent anchor pattern for high-performance coatings, and is dense enough to work efficiently. It is also recyclable through several cycles in the right setup. When the goal is a hard surface taken to a specified profile for a demanding coating, as in our work on industrial and water tanks, garnet is often the media that gets it there.
Baking soda
Sodium bicarbonate, the same compound as baking soda, is a soft, friable media that cleans without profiling. It crushes on impact and lifts paint, grease, soot, and contamination while leaving the surface underneath untouched, which makes it the choice for delicate work where cutting the substrate is unacceptable: aluminium, the gelcoat of a boat hull, food-processing environments, and fire, smoke, and mould remediation, where its alkalinity also helps neutralise odour. It is water-soluble and gentle, and it does not leave an anchor profile, which is exactly why it is used where a profile is not wanted. The trade-off is that it is not the media for cutting heavy rust or preparing steel for coating.
Walnut shell and corn cob
Crushed walnut shell and ground corn cob are organic, soft media that clean without removing the substrate, which makes them well suited to wood and other delicate surfaces. They lift old finish and the weathered surface layer from timber while leaving the wood beneath sound, which is central to restoring a log home without fuzzing or gouging the logs. Soft, biodegradable, and gentle, they are the wood-and-delicate end of the media range.
Steel grit and steel shot
At the heavy end are steel grit and steel shot. Grit is angular and cuts an aggressive profile into steel; shot is rounded and peens and cleans. Both are dense, fast, and recyclable many times over in enclosed recovery systems, which is why they are standard in shop and industrial settings for structural steel and heavy profiling. They are powerful and specialised, the opposite of soda and walnut on the spectrum, and used where the surface is tough and the required profile is deep.
Matching media to the surface: a quick reference
The right answer always depends on the specific surface and goal, but the broad pairings look like this.
- Steel with heavy rust or for coating: garnet, crushed glass, or steel grit for an aggressive, defined profile.

Why dustless changes the conversation
Introducing water into the stream, as dustless blasting does, changes how a media behaves as well as how much dust it makes. The water suppresses the dust cloud almost entirely, which is what makes the work safe around people, homes, and occupied buildings, and it also cushions the impact slightly, often allowing a gentler result.
