Begin far enough back to see the building, then move close. Colour alone is unreliable; location and shape tell more.

Compare elevations and details. Does the pattern begin below a window, roof joint, hose bib or sprinkler? Are lower courses buried in snow? Is vegetation restricting airflow? Did marks follow wire-brush work? Photograph the dry wall, record coating and cleaning history, and note whether a mark returns after washing.
Silvery grey: ultraviolet weathering, not automatically rot
Sunlight breaks down lignin at the surface, and weather loosens that degraded material until warm cedar turns silver or grey. Real Cedar describes this as a shallow effect; sound wood can remain underneath. Exposed walls weather differently from sheltered areas, producing blotches rather than uniform architectural silver.
Greying is not itself proof of decay. Dry, firm grey boards that still hold fasteners and profiles may be structurally serviceable. The restoration question is whether the owner wants to keep a natural weathered appearance or return to a coated finish. An intentionally weathered wall still needs sound installation, drying paths and routine removal of dirt or growth. A wall being stained or painted needs the loose, degraded surface prepared back to material the new system can bond to.
Thin shakes, weathered end grain and eroded growth can be damaged by excessive pressure or cutting media. A test patch must remove unsound fibre while preserving the profile; the right method may be controlled blasting, cleaning, brushing, sanding or selective replacement.
Black or green spotting: mildew, mould and algae favour moisture
Mildew and other surface moulds can appear black, grey, brown or even pale. Green growth is often algae. They favour moisture, shade, dirt and organic material on the coating. The north wall, areas behind vegetation, lower siding near splashback and sheltered recesses are common places to look. Growth may live on surface dirt or the coating rather than consuming sound cedar, but it still must be removed before refinishing.
Not every black mark is mildew. Real Cedar describes a spot test based on whether a dark mark lightens, but field tests and cleaners must follow manufacturer directions. Do not combine cleaning chemicals unless the manufacturer supplies that exact procedure. Use a controlled sample and rinse or neutralise as specified.
Cleaning without fixing moisture buys a short result. Correct sprinklers, eavestroughs, clearance, vegetation and leaks. Growth beneath a coating may require stripping; a new coat with mildewcide does not remove colonies trapped below it.
Brown or reddish runs: water can carry cedar extractives
Western red cedar contains water-soluble extractives that contribute to its colour and durability. When moisture dissolves and moves those compounds, they can leave tan, tea-coloured, reddish-brown or dark stains. This is called extractive bleeding. It may appear below knots, along lap joints, under fastener penetrations or through a light opaque coating that was not properly primed.
Moisture movement is the cause to investigate: rain entry, condensation, unsealed end grain, poor flashing or water held at a joint. Another topcoat will not stop extractives while the source remains.
Real Cedar recommends stain-blocking primer for opaque systems. Detergent, commercial cedar cleaners or oxalic-acid products may suit different stains, but chemistry and concentration belong to product instructions. Rinse, dry and test before coating; transparent stain will not hide persistent variation.
Blue-black marks: look for iron before blaming mould
Cedar extractives can react with iron and create dark blue-black staining. The source may be an inappropriate fastener, corrosion from a steel component, grinding dust, steel wool, or tiny metal deposits left by a wire brush. The tell is often a strong relationship to hardware or to the path of prior tool work. Real Cedar specifically warns against steel wool and wire brushes for this reason.
Iron stain differs from orange-red fastener rust and from mildew, though they can overlap. Correct the metal source and use fasteners specified for exterior cedar rather than whatever screw is available.
Some iron stains respond to commercial or oxalic-acid cleaners under manufacturer guidance; deeper marks may need light sanding. Trial a small area because overcleaning can leave a pale halo.
Peeling, blistering and blotchy sheen: diagnose the coating system
A failed coating has shapes and edges. Paint or solid stain may crack, curl, blister, peel or chalk. A semi-transparent system may fade unevenly, build lap marks, turn glossy where it did not absorb, or remain dark in sheltered areas. These symptoms point to adhesion, application, compatibility, ultraviolet exposure or moisture—not simply “dirty cedar.”
Contributors include loose grey fibre, trapped mildew, wet wood, missing stain-blocking primer, incompatible layers, excess penetrating stain, poor back-brushing and hot direct sun. Water entering from behind can push off a film even when its face was prepared well.
Local defects around a corrected detail may allow spot preparation. Widespread failure or a switch from paint to transparent stain usually means extensive removal. The goal is not “bare at any cost”; it is a clean, sound surface the chosen finish accepts.
Soft or crumbly wood: discolouration has become a repair issue
Decay is not a colour category. Wood can be dark without being rotten and can be decayed beneath a surface that looks ordinary. Probe only where appropriate and with care: suspicious cedar may feel soft, compress under modest pressure, crumble, lose its crisp profile or fail to hold a fastener. Persistent wetting at end grain, lower courses, window corners and penetrations deserves close attention.
Cosmetic preparation cannot restore lost wood. Decayed siding, sheathing or framing may require a carpenter or envelope professional after the water source is repaired. A refinishing quote should state whether board replacement and concealed work are included.
Cedar is decay-resistant, not immune when it stays wet. Finish helps manage wetting but cannot replace drainage, flashing, ventilation and clearance.
Use a controlled diagnosis and test-panel process
A practical assessment follows a repeatable sequence:
- Document the coating history. Find cans, invoices, colour names and approximate dates. Note previous cleaners and repairs.

Surface dirt and biological growth call for an approved cleaning process and correction of wetting. UV-grey fibre being recoated must be removed or conditioned to the finish manufacturer’s standard. Extractive and iron stains require their sources to be corrected and compatible cleaning or priming. Failed films require removal of unsound material and confirmation that anything left is compatible. Decayed boards require repair or replacement.
Gentle media blasting is useful for failed coating across detailed profiles, but it does not eliminate hand work. Test media, pressure, water, angle and distance on the siding. Shakes, thin boards and fragile trim need special treatment, followed where required by detail sanding, residue cleaning and drying.
Containment is scaled to the coating and site. Windows, fixtures, landscaping, vehicles and neighbours need protection. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) notes that abrasive-blasting hazards depend on the media and the surface being disturbed; old coatings can introduce lead or other hazards. Not every black wall returns to one “new cedar” tone. Some marks clean, some need fibre removal, some remain in the wood and some boards need replacement. Opaque finish can hide variation, but not an unresolved moisture source.
Keep the staining from returning
Inspect the wall after spring melt and again before winter. Watch the details that created the original pattern: overflowing gutters, roof-to-wall intersections, sill and head flashings, sprinklers, plants, grade clearance, deck attachments and unsealed end grain. Keep debris and biological growth from building on the finish, using a cleaning method approved for that coating.
Record each repair and maintenance coat. When exposed walls fade or stop shedding water as intended, renew the compatible system before bare grey fibre develops.
