What to Do After Media Blasting a Log Home

Blasting exposes the surface; inspection, secondary preparation and the selected finish manufacturer's complete system determine what must happen next.

The short version A media-blasted log wall is not automatically stain-ready. First inspect the revealed wood and correct rot or water entry. Remove residual media and loose fibre by the method required for the selected finish; some logs need detail sanding or buffing. Clean the bare wood as the coating manufacturer specifies and let it reach that system’s moisture and weather limits. Apply a compatible borate treatment where the preservation plan calls for one, then coordinate upward-facing checks, log ends, primers, stain, clear coats and chinking in the exact sequence approved by the product manufacturers. Prove the whole build-up on a representative sample panel. In Alberta, schedule the blast and refinish as one connected operation so clean bare wood is not left exposed while rain, smoke, frost or trade delays close the coating window.

When failed dark stain disappears and bright timber returns, rushed projects can go off course. Bare-looking logs may still carry media, loose fibre, deep colour, open checks, moisture or damaged joints. Media blasting removes the failed system and exposes the truth; the next steps turn that substrate into a documented finish foundation.

“Clean-looking” is not the same as coating-ready

Blasting opens texture, exposes dense and soft growth, reaches checks and reveals hidden repairs. Porosity can vary between weathered, sheltered and replacement logs, changing stain colour and absorption.

Before applying product, view walls from a distance for striping and missed finish, then inspect close for loose fibre, media, coating in checks, fragile knots and damaged chinking. Mark ends, crowns, undersides, corners, porch roofs and lower courses that need decisions.

The finish manufacturer may require washing, sanding, buffing, primer or a defined texture. Both Perma-Chink and Sashco publish post-blast detail steps, so “blasted means no sanding” is not a credible promise before inspection.

Inspect the exposed logs for moisture sources and decay

Inspect bare wood for softness around upward-facing checks, ends, sill courses, decks, windows and roof joints. Look for water tracks, failed flashing, insect galleries and old fillers. Only qualified people should perform probing or destructive investigation where the repair plan permits it.

Media blasting removes coatings and unsound surface fibre; it does not repair decay or restore lost section. A soft or structurally compromised log may need drying, preservative treatment, epoxy consolidation, a dutchman repair, partial replacement or engineering advice depending on extent and location. Those decisions belong ahead of decorative finish.

Correct drainage, splashback, failed joints and details that trap water. Record repairs with photos and moisture readings rather than asking the coating to conceal an active problem.

Remove residual media, dust and loose fibre without creating a new hazard

Media can lodge in checks, corners and rough grain, while dust and loose fibre weaken adhesion. Cleanup must fit the finish system and the removed coating’s hazards.

Manufacturers commonly require debris removal and an approved log wash. Follow the selected system rather than borrowing cleaner, dilution or timing rules from another brand.

Compressed air is sometimes specified for surface debris, but old lead or other hazardous coatings can make dry blowing unsafe. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) calls for risk assessment, access control, suitable protection and hazard-specific cleanup; it cautions against compressed-air and dry-sweeping cleanup for lead. The pre-blast containment plan must also control post-blast housekeeping.

Dry media can pass through failed joints. The test patch must address interior leakage and protection for rooms, fixtures, landscaping and adjacent property.

Detail sanding or buffing is a condition, not a failure

A well-controlled blast aims to remove the coating while preserving log profiles, but wood is variable. Weathered soft growth may erode faster than dense growth. Heavy layers require more work than a faded penetrating stain. Corn cob, walnut, recycled glass and other media leave different textures, and operator angle or dwell can change the result.

Inspect the dry surface in raking light. Sand or buff where needed for fuzz, residue, dark remnants and coating edges; corners, checks, knots and ends often need hand attention. The goal is not furniture-smooth wood because exterior finishes need suitable texture.

Use the finish manufacturer’s grit or conditioning method and clean afterward as specified. Make one wall section the accepted texture standard before moving to colour.

Complete wood repairs before preservation and finish

Once the substrate is visible and detailed, complete the repairs that need bare wood. Replace or rebuild unsound wood, address failed log ends, secure loose trim and correct flashing. Remove incompatible silicone or failed sealant where the new joint system requires adhesion. Do not fill over damp, dirty or decayed material.

Natural checks need judgment. Upward-facing checks that collect water are the priority; underside checks may drain and remain sound. Follow the system’s sealant sequence instead of filling every crack and risking trapped moisture or poor joint geometry.

End grain accepts moisture and colour differently. Some systems call for smoother sanding, stain and a dedicated end seal in order; a generic clear sealer can interfere.

Apply borate only as part of a compatible preservation plan

Borate can protect eligible bare wood from decay fungi and insects, but product, concentration, amount, target, drying and finish compatibility all matter. It cannot rebuild rot or solve water entry.

This is the moment to decide because many borate products are intended for bare, unsealed wood. Perma-Chink’s restoration sequence places borate after stripping, cleaning and dry-down and before its coating steps. Sashco similarly places preservation between prep and finish. Manufacturer directions vary, particularly for surface treatments, glycol-based products, rods and remedial work in thick logs.

Apply to receptive wood after repair and cleaning, protect adjacent materials as labelled, allow the stated dry-down, and re-clean if required. Confirm borate, primer, stain and sealant compatibility; more chemical is not automatically more protection.

Coordinate checks, chinking and caulking with the chosen finish system

There is no universal “chink before stain” or “stain before chink” rule. Restoration can require temporary or permanent sealing before blasting so media and water do not enter the building. Later, one manufacturer may prefer its finish on clean wood before final chinking; another published sequence may place certain sealants or check repairs before stain and chinking repair after colour. Sealant adhesion and appearance depend on the exact pairing.

Sashco warns that waxy or non-drying oils can interfere with sealant adhesion and that stain may colour chinking differently. Perma-Chink publishes its own sequence for pre-strip sealing, checks, stain, chinking repair and topcoat.

Write one approved sequence covering retained chinking, cut-outs, temporary sealing, cure intervals, masking and stain across sealant. Use a joint mock-up when colour matters.

Measure moisture and weather for the exact products being used

Bare logs do not dry evenly. Sun-facing faces can appear ready while shaded lower courses, deep checks and repaired end grain remain wet. A single reading on the best wall is not enough. Use a suitable calibrated moisture meter and document representative readings across elevations, courses, ends, repairs and sheltered details.

Do not borrow one universal percentage. Oil, waterborne, preservative, primer and sealant products have different limits; current technical data and actual surface condition control.

Alberta adds a short and changeable weather window. Air and log-surface temperatures, humidity, direct sun, wind, wildfire smoke, overnight lows, forecast rain and cure time all matter. The wall may need shade or a different work sequence to avoid hot application. If rain interrupts the gap between cleaning and stain, reinspection, new moisture readings and sometimes recleaning are required. Schedule media blasting with the finish materials, repair trades and a realistic weather contingency already arranged.

Prove primer, stain and topcoat on the blasted surface

Blasted logs are often more porous than smooth new logs, so stain may appear darker and consume more material than a colour chart suggests. Differences in texture between walls can also change sheen. Some manufacturer systems specify a clear primer or conditioner on blasted surfaces to even absorption; others rely on their stain’s own application sequence. A generic primer can block penetration or create incompatibility, so use only what the coating manufacturer approves.

Build a sample through detail work, cleaner, borate, primer, colour, back-brushing, clear coat and adjacent sealant. Include old and repaired wood and differing exposures, then judge the cured colour, adhesion and texture.

Record preparation, moisture, product, colour formula, coverage and technique. “Brown medium” is not a reproducible specification.

Use a written post-blast sequence and handoff

A typical project logic—not a substitute for product instructions—looks like this:

For a strip-only handoff, document more than “ready for stain.” Provide the blast date and method, any cleaning and sanding performed, repairs or suspect wood, remaining coating, moisture readings, areas protected, sample result and the date by which the finish manufacturer requires another wash. The finishing contractor should accept the substrate before the blasting crew demobilizes.

What changes the quote after blasting

Post-blast work depends on what the coating concealed. Quote factors include log area and profile, height and access, number and type of old layers, porosity and fuzzing, media trapped in checks, extent of hand detail, failed chinking, rot and repair scope, borate system, log-end work, cleaning and dry-down, sample panels, finish coats and containment. Occupied cabins, complex decks, gardens and close neighbours change staging.

Reliable pricing follows a test patch and close survey. Unknown decay needs a clear allowance or change-order method, plus ownership of weather delays and substrate acceptance between trades.

Maintain the complete system, not just the stain colour

Keep the approved product and colour records, sample board, moisture log and repair photos. Inspect exposed walls, upward-facing checks, log ends, chinking, window and door joints, roof intersections and lower courses each year. Clean pollen, dirt and biological growth using the finish manufacturer’s maintenance method.

Do not wait for bare grey wood across the whole house. Renew the compatible colour or clear maintenance layer when the system indicates it, concentrating on the elevations that wear first. Repair a failed check or chinking joint before it becomes a water path. A post-blast restoration is a reset; routine inspection is what keeps the owner from paying for another full reset sooner than necessary.

Frequently asked questions

Do log homes need sanding after media blasting?

Some do. The need depends on the logs, old finish, media, operator technique, surface texture and new coating system. Detail sanding or buffing may remove loose fibre, roughness, dark remnants or lap edges. The test patch and finish manufacturer’s preparation requirements decide it; “never needs sanding” is not a responsible promise.

Should blasted logs be washed before staining?

Many major log-home finish systems require a post-blast cleaning step to remove dust, loose fibre and residue, but the cleaner, dilution, rinse and timing are system-specific. Follow the selected manufacturer’s current directions and let the wood meet its moisture requirement before coating.

Does borate go on before or after log stain?

Many surface borate treatments are applied to clean bare wood before stain, but the specific product controls. Rods, glycol treatments and remedial applications may differ. Confirm compatibility, application amount, drying and any required rewash with both the preservative and finish manufacturers.

Should chinking be completed before staining a log home?

It depends on the system and whether sealing is needed before blasting. Some joints are sealed first to keep media out, while final chinking may follow stain. Other check sealants occur before colour. Write the sequence from the stain and sealant manufacturers rather than using one universal rule.

How soon after blasting should an Alberta log home be stained?

As soon as repairs, cleaning, preservation, moisture readings, weather and the full product sequence allow. Do not leave prepared wood exposed unnecessarily, but do not coat it wet or outside the product limits just to meet a date. Coordinate the full restoration before blasting begins.
