The short version Identified, detached steel snowplow blades, A-frames and mount pieces may suit shop blasting, but hydraulic, electrical, wear and structural decisions must be separated before work begins. Begin with the plow manufacturer's parts diagram and inspection procedure. Confirm whether the piece is carbon steel, stainless steel, polymer or a mixed assembly; lower and support the blade; isolate stored hydraulic and spring energy; and have a qualified provider remove cylinders, hoses, wiring, lights, rubber, pins, bushings and other vulnerable components as required. A removable steel mouldboard, A-frame or mount bracket may then be assessed for matched-media preparation. Polymer skins, hydraulic parts and complete energized assemblies are not routine blasting candidates.

Matched-media preparation can remove compatible coating and accessible corrosion, exposing pitting, cracks or a previous weld. Welding, mechanical inspection, parts replacement, primer, paint or powder coating, installation and operational checks remain separate unless specifically confirmed in writing.
Identify the component and material before removing finish
“Snowplow blade” can mean the entire front attachment or only the mouldboard skin. A useful scope names the component and its function.

Manufacturer names for similar-looking parts are not interchangeable. Record the plow make, model, serial information and vehicle application, then photograph labels before preparation. A replacement skin, repaired A-frame or home-built mount can change the material and inspection route.
Edmonton's winter road-maintenance information provides local context for abrasive materials and winter operations. Road residue, moisture and coating damage can accelerate deterioration, but the cause and remaining condition of one plow still require an item-specific assessment.
Make lowering, isolation and removal a qualified operation
Snowplow assemblies can move under gravity, hydraulic pressure, trip springs or vehicle power. A blade resting visually near the floor is not necessarily in a verified zero-energy state. Use the current manufacturer manual and trained personnel.
Before detaching a candidate piece:
- park the carrier on a stable surface and control the work area;
- lower and support the blade as the manufacturer specifies;
- remove the ignition key and isolate electrical, hydraulic and other stored energy;
- relieve pressure only through the specified procedure;
- control trip springs, wings and articulating sections before releasing pins;
- use rated lifting and blocking equipment at approved points;
- cap and protect open hydraulic and electrical interfaces;
- photograph pin orientation, shims, fasteners and hose routing; and
- place detached pieces on a stable pallet, rack or cradle.
The WESTERN snow-and-ice equipment maintenance checklist calls for checks of mounting, hydraulic leaks, cutting-edge wear, fasteners and electrical connections. That reinforces the boundary: surface preparation belongs inside a broader manufacturer-led maintenance sequence. Evolve does not tell an owner how to improvise removal or accept an unsupported, suspended or pressurized assembly as normal shop intake.
Heavy A-frames and mount pieces also need a transport plan. A corroded lifting eye or worn pin hole is not automatically a safe tie-down. Send dimensions, weight information, centre-of-gravity concerns, support photographs and loading access before arranging pickup or customer drop-off.
Treat the cutting edge as a wear decision
The cutting edge is a consumable working surface, not just another rusty strip. Its material, remaining height, bolt condition, wear pattern and manufacturer's limits determine whether it stays, is removed for access or is replaced. Blasting cannot add back worn material or make an edge meet specification.
Remove the edge when the manufacturer or servicing dealer requires it for inspection, replacement or access to the mouldboard joint. Frozen, seized or wasted fasteners may need qualified mechanical work. Do not direct abrasive at bolt threads, locating surfaces or a specialty carbide or rubber edge simply because the adjacent blade is steel.
Use the edge removal as an inspection opportunity:
- photograph wear across the full width;
- check the blade-to-edge seam for trapped scale and distortion;
- identify elongated or torn bolt holes;
- flag cracked welds and deformed backing material;
- note whether shoes and their mounts show uneven wear; and
- compare replacement decisions with the current plow manual.
BOSS's straight-blade maintenance guidance lists cutting-edge and shoe wear, fasteners, hydraulic lines, cylinders and electrical connections as recurring inspection points. A blast-cleaned mouldboard does not satisfy those separate maintenance tasks. The dealer or qualified plow technician makes wear, fastener and return-to-service decisions.
Separate hydraulics, electrics, rubber and precision hardware
A complete power plow contains many components that abrasive and moisture can damage. Create a removal or protection map before the steel is delivered.
Exclude or have the responsible provider remove:
- hydraulic cylinders, polished rods, hoses, fittings, valves, manifolds, pump and reservoir;
- motors, solenoids, relays, controls, harnesses, plugs, grounds, lamps and reflectors;
- rubber cutting edges, snow deflectors, hoses, covers and bump stops;
- trip and return springs unless safely removed under the manufacturer's procedure;
- pins, bushings, bearings, grease fittings and precision pivot interfaces;
- stainless or plated hardware requiring a different finish;
- labels, serial markings and capacity or warning decals; and
- pressurized, sealed or safety-critical pieces not explicitly accepted.
Some threaded holes and fits may be plugged or masked; other pieces should be removed entirely. Masking cannot make a hydraulic seal, electrical connector or lubricated bushing suitable for routine blasting. The installer should identify fastener contact zones, electrical grounds and fit surfaces that must remain free of coating as well as abrasive.
Contamination also matters. Disclose hydraulic oil, grease, salt residue, de-icer, fuel and unknown coatings. Drain or cap systems only under service instructions. Abrasive blasting is not a repair for an active leak, and the removed coating and contamination must be managed as a worksite and waste-stream concern.
Use blasting as an inspection hold point, not a certificate
Old coating and scale can conceal conditions that change the job. Agree on an initial test area and a named decision-maker before the entire component is stripped. Media, pressure, angle and wet or dry delivery should be matched to material, thickness, geometry and the requested finish.
Pause when cleaning reveals:
- a crack at a weld, bend, pin boss or mounting hole;
- perforation, deep pitting or a knife-edge section;
- an elongated pivot or fastener hole;
- a previous weld, patch, brazed area, filler or heat damage;
- distortion in an A-frame, quadrant, mouldboard rib or vehicle mount;
- corrosion entering a closed tube or inaccessible overlap;
- a substrate or coating different from the documented scope; or
- a weak support or handling point.
Evolve can photograph and describe exposed accessible condition. It does not perform magnetic-particle or other non-destructive testing, measure structural capacity, certify a vehicle mount or state that the plow will withstand service. The manufacturer, qualified fabricator, installer, mechanic or engineer—depending on the component and finding—decides whether it is repaired, replaced or rejected.
If welding follows, expect the repaired and heat-affected area to require cleaning again. Do not cover a concern with primer merely to keep a schedule. The hold point exists to let the right trade see the metal before finishing.
Coordinate coating and corrosion protection before blasting
Snowplow steel sees impact, abrasion, moisture and winter residue. The coating provider should define the preparation result, primer, edge treatment, film build and cure conditions for the actual system. AMPP's surface-preparation standards index shows why “bare metal” is not one universal specification; different methods and cleanliness levels have defined requirements.
Give the finisher a map that identifies:
- carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized or mixed substrates;
- included faces, pits, seams, welds and sharp edges;
- repaired locations needing repeated preparation;
- pivot bores, pin fits, threads and bearing surfaces kept free of coating;
- electrical grounds and fastener contact areas;
- inaccessible tube interiors or overlaps outside the blast scope;
- compatible seam protection after structural inspection; and
- the planned transport and storage environment.
Freshly exposed steel is reactive and can collect condensation when moved between cold and warm conditions. There is no universal paint-ready appearance or fixed deadline for every primer. Use the coating manufacturer's current technical data sheet for surface profile, cleaning, temperature, dew-point margin, application and cure.
Primer, paint and powder coating are separate unless confirmed. Powder coating also requires the coater to assess oven suitability, trapped oil, mixed materials and springs or assemblies that should not be heated. After finishing, the plow provider reinstalls systems, lubricates specified points, adjusts components and performs the full inspection.
Plan the photo quote and preseason schedule together
The best time to address a marginal coating is before the truck is committed to storm duty. The best time to discover a cracked mount is not after blasting when no repair slot or replacement part is planned. Work backwards from the needed service date and arrange inspection, repair, surface preparation, coating, cure, assembly and testing as distinct stages.

Remove loose snow and ice without hiding condition. Disclose grease, oil and road residue. Cold steel may need acclimation and drying before reliable inspection and preparation. A stable detached piece on a suitable rack is different from a complete plow balanced in a truck box; describe the actual shipping state.

Can a complete snowplow be sandblasted as one assembly?
Do not assume so. A complete plow includes hydraulics, wiring, lights, rubber, springs, pins, bushings, grease interfaces and mixed materials that are not routine blasting candidates. A qualified provider should isolate stored energy and remove eligible steel pieces under the manufacturer procedure. Evolve then assesses the documented component and protected surfaces.
Can rust be removed from a snowplow A-frame or vehicle mount?
Accessible coating and corrosion may be removed from an identified, detached steel A-frame or mount piece after condition and handling review. Blasting may expose cracks, pitting, elongated holes or earlier repairs. It does not test structural capacity or certify attachment to the vehicle; the responsible installer, fabricator or engineer makes those decisions.
Should the cutting edge be blasted or replaced?
That is a wear and manufacturer-specification decision. Remaining height, material, wear pattern, bolt holes and backing condition matter. Blasting cannot restore consumed edge material. Have the plow provider inspect the edge and fasteners, decide on removal or replacement, and define whether any separate steel surface is suitable for preparation.
What happens if blasting exposes a cracked snowplow weld?
Work should pause and the finding should be photographed for the named decision-maker. A qualified fabricator or manufacturer-approved provider determines repair or replacement. Blasting does not certify the weld. If repair proceeds, the repaired and heat-affected area may need preparation again before the specified coating is accepted.
