The short version Prepare a trailer for blasting by defining the coating goal, removing cargo and heavy contamination, opening access to rusted steel, and either removing or protecting everything that abrasive, water or grit could damage. That usually means making decisions about decking, wiring, lights, tyres, hubs, bearings, brakes, hydraulics, identification plates and undercoating before the blast crew arrives. Blasting removes coatings and corrosion; it does not repair cracked welds, thin cross-members or perforated frame rails.
An Edmonton utility trailer used on weekends and a working dump or stock trailer may share a steel frame, but they do not present the same preparation job. The right scope depends on construction, condition, the next coating system, whether the work will be mobile or shop-based, and who will complete any mechanical or structural repairs. This guide turns those variables into a practical plan for owners, fleet managers, repair shops and coating contractors.
Start with the finish and service plan
Build the blast scope backwards from what the trailer needs after refinishing. Is the goal a maintenance repaint, a full colour change, powder-coating preparation, or exposure of hidden corrosion before a repair decision? Future service affects what must be dismantled, the cleanliness and profile specified, and which areas must remain uncoated.
Identify the substrate as well. A carbon-steel frame, galvanized components, aluminium skin, stainless hardware and thin sheet panels cannot be treated as one material. The process and coating system must suit each surface, with a test area where construction or finish is uncertain.
Record the starting condition with photographs before anything is removed. Include the tongue, coupler, safety-chain mounts, main rails, cross-members, spring hangers, axle mounts, fenders, deck-to-frame joints, gates, hinges, welds and underside. Mark parts that will be replaced and surfaces excluded from blasting. This record gives the blaster, repairer and coater the same scope and makes reassembly much less dependent on memory.
Degrease before abrasive work begins
Abrasive impact is not a substitute for degreasing. Heavy oil, bearing grease, hydraulic fluid, fuel residue, wax and road film can contaminate abrasive, smear across adjacent steel or remain in pits. The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) SSPC-SP 1 standard treats removal of visible oil and grease as a separate preparation condition before further surface preparation.
Start by finding the source. A leaking hub seal, weeping hydraulic fitting or overfilled grease point will re-contaminate newly prepared steel unless it is repaired or isolated. Scrape off heavy deposits, then clean with a method and product compatible with the substrate, site controls and planned coating. Rinse or remove cleaning residue as the product directs, and repeat the inspection after the surface dries. The objective is a surface free of visible oil and grease—not one that merely looks brighter around the contamination.
Dump bodies and equipment trailers often collect packed soil or oily fines above cross-members. Stock trailers can carry manure, bedding, hair and disinfectant residue in seams and at the floor line. Those materials need to be removed before blasting both for access and because the unknown material being struck contributes to the job's exposure and containment plan. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) recommends assessing the media, the surface being blasted, environmental conditions and everyone who could be affected before abrasive work starts.
Open access around decks and cargo bodies
Deck removal is a scope decision, not an automatic rule. Sound boards may remain where every required steel face is accessible and can be protected. On many flatdecks and utility trailers, however, boards cover the top flanges of cross-members, trap debris at bolt holes and hide corrosion at the deck-to-frame joint. Leaving them installed can turn a full-frame restoration into a partial one.
Inspect timber for rot, checking, oil saturation and damaged fasteners before reuse. Label reusable boards and hardware by position. Remove hardware that obstructs the blast path. If expanded metal, steel plate or a dump box stays, define concealed faces that remain out of scope.
Stock trailers need special attention at floor edges, dividers, gates, latches and lower wall seams. Remove bedding and organic residue completely, then verify whether thin sheet or aluminium panels can tolerate the selected process. For a dump trailer, the body must be secured using the manufacturer's safe service procedure before anyone works around or beneath it. A hydraulic cylinder alone is not a safe support.
Protect wiring, lights, identification and controls
Decide whether vulnerable items will be removed or masked. Removal usually gives better access behind light brackets, junction boxes and wiring clips; masking is faster where the surrounding steel can still be prepared properly. Disconnect power sources before handling electrical equipment, label every connector, and photograph cable routing. Loose wiring should not be left to whip in the blast stream, and open connectors need protection from abrasive, moisture and cleaning chemicals.
Protect or remove lamps, reflectors, camera systems, breakaway batteries, plugs, control boxes, pressure gauges and plastic air lines. Include wiring inside open frame channels, not just the visible harness. Locate the vehicle identification number and all manufacturer, capacity and compliance labels before work begins. Photograph them clearly and mask them with a durable cover that will remain in place through blasting and coating. Do not grind, blast, fill or paint over the VIN. Alberta requires an official VIN when the original is lost or obliterated; protecting an existing identifier is far simpler than resolving an identification problem later.
Isolate tyres, hubs, bearings and brakes
Tyres and wheels can shield frame surfaces and make it difficult to work around spring hangers, axle seats and fender brackets. Removing them can improve access, but it also changes how the trailer must be supported and transported. That decision belongs in the work plan, with stands and lifting points suitable for the trailer's weight and configuration.
Abrasive and rinse water do not belong in wheel bearings, seals, brake drums, discs, electrical brake assemblies or lubricated hubs. Remove affected assemblies where a mechanical service is already planned, or mask them as a sealed system and keep the blast stream away. Protect wheel studs, machined mounting faces and tyre valve stems. If wheels remain installed, remember that a cover over the tyre does not automatically seal the hub or brake backing plate.
Use the refinishing window to inspect rather than assume. Alberta's commercial trailer inspection record calls out tyre condition and markings, wheel rims, hubs, fasteners and wheel bearings as distinct components. Surface preparation can reveal rust around mounts and suspension brackets, but a qualified inspection is still required to determine whether running gear is serviceable.
Shield hydraulic and mechanical components
Dump and tilt trailers add cylinders, hoses, pumps, reservoirs, valves, batteries, pins and pivots to the masking list. Retract cylinder rods where the manufacturer's procedure permits; exposed polished rods can be damaged by a single pass of abrasive. Cap or seal disconnected hydraulic lines, protect hose ends and fittings, and clean existing leaks before blasting. Do not coat grease fittings, bearing surfaces, pivot bores or ground points.
Mechanical parts need the same judgement. Coupler balls and contact surfaces, jack screws, landing-gear mechanisms, latch faces, hinge pins, safety-chain hardware and brake linkages may require removal, selective preparation or a carefully defined no-blast zone. Painting a moving interface can create fit problems; blasting a machined or sealing surface can alter it.
Prepare a simple exclusion drawing when the trailer has several systems. A strip of tape is easy to miss once containment and protective wrapping cover the unit. A drawing and walk-around let the owner, blaster and repair or coating contractor confirm what stays bare, what is masked and what is removed.
Treat undercoating as a scope question
Old undercoating, rubberized material and bedliner can conceal corrosion, but removal effort varies widely with product, thickness, adhesion and access. Some areas release cleanly under an appropriate process; others require scraping, cutting or a staged method before final blasting. A test patch shows how the material behaves and whether it is hiding sound steel, scale or perforation.
Agree in writing whether the job includes complete removal, removal only where failed, or feathering to a sound edge for a compatible maintenance system. Define inaccessible cavities separately. Blasting the outside of a boxed rail cannot clean corrosion deep inside it, and a new exterior coating cannot stop an active source of trapped moisture within a closed section.
Coating history matters. Unknown old paint or undercoating may contain hazardous constituents, and the material released from the surface becomes part of the blast debris. Identification, containment, personal protection and disposal should follow the hazard assessment and applicable site requirements. "Low dust" is a method characteristic, not permission to ignore what is being removed.
Map rust at cross-members, welds and enclosed sections
Before blasting, mark bubbling paint, rust jacking, swollen seams, drainage points, damaged welds and areas that sound or look thin. Pay particular attention to the lower flange of main rails, the ends and tops of cross-members, spring and equalizer hangers, the tongue transition, coupler and safety-chain mounts, fender supports, ramp hinges, jack mounts and the points where unlike materials meet.
After blasting, repeat the map on clean steel. The second survey matters more because scale and filler no longer obscure the edges of pits, cracks or perforations. Photographs with a location reference help the repair shop quote accurately. Where section loss may affect capacity, appearance is not enough; the owner should have the component assessed by a qualified trailer repairer or other appropriate professional.
Blasting reveals condition and establishes a coating-ready surface. It does not restore lost metal thickness, close a crack or make a compromised weld safe. That distinction keeps the refinishing decision honest: sound steel proceeds to coating, repairable damage proceeds to repair, and severe deterioration may change the economics of the project.
Put inspection and structural repair in the right sequence
A useful sequence is: stabilize any unsafe condition; remove cargo and vulnerable parts; repair active leaks; degrease; expose the structure; inspect; complete approved structural repairs; then reprepare welded and heat-affected areas before coating. Agree on any variation before work begins.
Fresh welds, replacement cross-members and ground repair areas do not automatically match the cleanliness and profile of the surrounding blast. They need final preparation to the receiving coating's specification. Welding after primer may also damage coating beside the repair and generate fumes or contamination, so coating and repair trades should coordinate the hold points.
For road-going equipment, the person who makes the structural decision should be separate from the blasting claim. A blast crew can document what was exposed; a qualified repairer or inspector determines whether rails, mounts, running gear and welds remain fit for service. Never tow a questionable trailer simply because the rust now looks clean.
Choose mobile or shop blasting and plan the move
Mobile work can suit a large trailer already parked at an Edmonton-area yard, especially when moving it would be difficult. The site still needs room for equipment and hoses, controlled access, protection for nearby vehicles and buildings, and a plan for spent abrasive, coating debris and water where wet blasting is used. Wind, precipitation and freezing conditions can change the method or the schedule. Wet blasting reduces airborne dust, but it does not eliminate containment or cleanup.
Shop work can simplify lifting, disassembly, winter preparation and controlled coating. It may suit extensive welding, running-gear or hydraulic service, or a booth-applied finish. Transport then becomes part of the quote.
Confirm roadworthiness before towing. If brakes, tyres, lights, coupler, frame or identification are compromised, arrange appropriate transport rather than treating the trip to the blast site as a test drive. Not always. A sound deck can sometimes remain if it can be protected and every steel surface in the agreed scope is accessible.
