Oil and grease stains, and why household degreasers stall

Oil is the classic driveway stain and the most misunderstood. When a vehicle drips oil, transmission fluid, or grease onto concrete, the liquid does not stay on the surface for long. It penetrates, and keeps penetrating, wicking deeper over hours and days until it reaches several millimetres down. By the time you notice the dark halo, the oil you can see is only the top of a column that runs well below it. A fresh drip you catch quickly is a very different problem from a spot that has soaked up leaks for a year.

Household degreasers stall on old oil for a simple reason: they can only act on what they can reach. Not every stain needs a professional, and it would be dishonest to suggest otherwise. If a spill is fresh and you reach it quickly, DIY methods have a genuine chance. One whitish stain is worth singling out, because it is not really a stain at all.
