Good winter candidates are usually removable, uncomplicated metal pieces: guards, covers, steps, brackets, shields, access panels and similar parts with clear access to both sides. The decision depends on material, thickness, coating, contamination and function—not whether a person can lift the part. Electronics, hydraulics, bearings, seals, precision or mating surfaces, pressure-containing pieces and safety-critical components should be removed, protected or excluded. Springs, raised attachments and other stored energy must be controlled by a qualified person under the equipment manufacturer's procedure before disassembly.

A guard is simple only when it has no trapped spring force, attached sensor or structural function. A step can still have a cracked mount. A cast cover can contain oil and have a machined gasket face. Screen the complete assembly before judging the detached piece.
Focus on parts whose downtime is already planned. If removal would disable an emergency machine, compromise safe storage or create a difficult calibration, another schedule may be better. Shut down, lower, block and remove under the OEM procedure
Farm machines contain more than electrical energy. A raised header can descend, a tensioned belt or spring can move, a hydraulic circuit can retain pressure, and a rotating assembly can coast or shift under gravity. Turning off the ignition is not a complete isolation method.

Before any component is prepared for transport:
- park on a stable surface and control access to the machine;
- stop, lower, block, chock and de-energize according to the manufacturer's procedure;
- relieve or isolate stored hydraulic, pneumatic, spring and gravitational energy as directed;
- remove the key and apply the site's hazardous-energy controls where required;
- use supports, lifting devices and attachment points rated for the actual part;
- cap open lines and protect the machine from contamination under the service procedure;
- photograph orientation, shims, hardware and adjustment positions before separation; and
- have the responsible mechanic label what must be inspected before return to service.

Clean enough to inspect and disclose every residue
Soil and crop debris retain moisture and can conceal sharp damage. Fertilizer residue can be corrosive. Pesticide, seed treatment, manure, oil, diesel and hydraulic fluid introduce distinct exposure, handling and waste concerns. “Farm dirt” is not an adequate description for shop intake.
Alberta's equipment-sanitation best practices recommend equipment-specific cleaning protocols and warn that electronics may not tolerate water, detergents or disinfectants. That guidance addresses the spread of soil-borne pests and disease; it should not be confused with abrasive preparation. The owner remains responsible for any required farm, crop, livestock, chemical-label or regulatory procedure before transport.
Provide a written residue history:
- crops, fields and soil conditions the part contacted;
- fertilizer type and whether dry product is trapped in seams or cavities;
- pesticide, herbicide, seed treatment or disinfectant exposure;
- manure, animal tissue or other biological material;
- hydraulic oil, grease, diesel, coolant and active leaks;
- lead-containing, chromate or other unknown legacy coating concerns; and
- cleaning agents already used and whether rinse water remains trapped.
Do not pressure-wash bearings, electronics or seals simply to make the part look acceptable. Follow the equipment and chemical manufacturer's directions. Evolve will decide whether additional intake controls, owner cleaning, specialist handling or refusal is appropriate based on the actual disclosure.
Protect precision, pressure, electrical and safety functions
Masking can protect an accessible edge or label; it cannot make every attached system compatible with abrasive. Remove vulnerable parts where the equipment procedure allows and clearly mark the remainder.
Keep blasting away from:
- bearing races, bushings, seals, grease cavities and lubricated joints;
- hydraulic cylinder rods, ports, valves, pumps, hoses and accumulators;
- electrical connectors, harnesses, sensors, control modules, monitors and lamps;
- machined bores, gasket faces, pivots, calibrated holes and precision fits;
- chains, belts, sprockets, gears and friction components;
- pressure-containing tanks, lines and chemical metering pieces;
- rubber, plastic, glass, foam, decals and reflective markings;
- serial numbers, compliance plates and setup references; and
- load-bearing or safety-critical parts without the responsible specialist's assessment.
Threads may need plugs or caps suited to the process. Ground points and clamped interfaces may need to remain bare through coating. A pivot hole can lose fit if it is profiled or filled with paint. Create one marked diagram that follows the part from disassembly through blasting, coating and reassembly.
Unknown coatings also require screening. The material being removed becomes part of the exposure and waste stream. A controlled shop still needs appropriate containment, ventilation, protective equipment and cleanup; wet methods may reduce airborne dust but do not make hazardous coatings harmless.
Match the process and establish inspection hold points
Different parts within one farm batch may require separate settings or separate processes. Heavy carbon-steel brackets may tolerate a more assertive preparation than a thin hood. Cast iron can retain oil. Aluminum can erode or become over-profiled. Galvanized steel may need the zinc layer preserved. Stainless pieces require contamination control.
The next coating determines the required cleanliness and profile. Choose an applicable project specification with the coater; do not translate “make it clean” into an unsupported promise.
Use a representative test where the material, coating stack or repair history is uncertain. Pause when preparation exposes:
- perforation, deep pitting or knife-edge thinning;
- cracks at bolt holes, bends, welds or mounting flanges;
- brazing, filler, patches or earlier heat damage;
- corrosion entering a seam, box section or inaccessible overlap;
- a distorted hinge, step, guard mount or alignment feature;
- embedded contamination or oil returning from a casting; or
- a substrate different from the intake description.
Photograph the finding and send it to the named decision-maker. Evolve can report what is visible after surface removal but does not test remaining thickness, certify welds, establish guard compliance or approve the machine for operation. A dealer, fabricator, mechanic or engineer, where appropriate, makes the repair or replacement decision.
Hand off to repair, coating, storage and reassembly
Build the sequence backwards from spring use. Name the repairer, painter or powder coater, reassembly technician and final inspector before the part is blasted. That makes it possible to choose the correct surface profile, protect the right interfaces and avoid bare steel waiting while a provider is found.
The blast handoff should record:
- each part identifier and the machine it belongs to;
- included and excluded faces;
- media method and agreed visible preparation result;
- defects, repairs or material changes exposed;
- seams, cavities or contamination not fully accessible;
- protected bores, labels, threads and ground points; and
- storage condition and the receiving coating requirements.
Repair can change the prepared surface. Welded and heat-affected areas may need to return for cleaning before coating. The coater decides whether pits require treatment, whether mixed metals can enter an oven, and which primer and topcoat match chemical, abrasion and ultraviolet exposure. There is no universal paint-ready state or fixed winter coating window.
After coating, the responsible technician reinstalls bearings, seals, hydraulics, wiring, guards and hardware; checks clearances and grounding; applies specified lubricants; and completes the manufacturer's pre-operation inspection. Blasting is one surface-preparation stage, not proof that the equipment is ready for the field.
Build a winter photo quote that answers the hard questions
A clear quote request lets the shop sort compatible parts and identify exclusions before anyone drives. Send:
- an overview of the whole machine with removal locations marked;
- every face, edge, mount and cavity of each detached part;
- close-ups of the worst rust, welds, cracks, bends and coating failure;
- manufacturer, model, serial context and part numbers where relevant;
- dimensions, approximate weight and safe lift or pallet points;
- known steel, aluminum, galvanized, stainless or cast construction;
- crop, fertilizer, pesticide, manure, oil and cleaning history;
- a list of systems removed and any remaining precision surfaces;
- labelled no-blast and no-coating zones;
- the required inspection, repair and coating sequence; and
- customer drop-off details or a request to assess pickup or transport.
Bundle compatible brackets or guards in labelled lots, but do not hide different materials and functions in one crate. Separate left and right parts and bag hardware away from blast work. Remove loose snow and ice before travel. Cold pieces may need controlled acclimation and drying so condensation does not complicate inspection or contaminate freshly prepared steel.
