A unibody integrates rails, rockers, floors and pillars into the body. Removing bolt-on subframes does not create a “body-off frame.” A shell needs different support, measurement and repair planning, while broad thin panels bring different distortion risks.

Ford's structural-repair position statement lists frames, rails and welded body-in-white panels among components that can affect loads, crash-energy management and occupant protection. Strip the frame to a blast-ready assembly

Installed components block access and create pockets for abrasive or water. Bearings and seals are poor candidates for casual masking, while wiring and open lines can carry media far beyond the work area.

Protect what must not be profiled or filled with media

Abrasive preparation intentionally changes a surface. That is useful on coating areas and inappropriate on many functional ones. Create a written masking map for:

Threaded openings may use suitable sacrificial fasteners or plugs. A blast mask may not survive an oven or suit the coater, so coordinate materials and removal timing. Avoid packing cavities with material that could be forgotten.

Factory drains need deliberate treatment. Keep required openings clear, protect boxed sections as planned and confirm every drain during handoff.

Degrease first and treat old coatings as unknowns

Blast media is not a degreaser. Oil, grease, wax-based rustproofing and fuel residue can foul abrasive, spread contamination and remain in pits or seams. Find and correct leaks, scrape heavy deposits and use a compatible cleaning process before blasting. Inspect again after the surface dries because oil can migrate back from overlaps and cavities.

Old paint, undercoating, filler and seam material affect process, containment and waste. A gentle medium does not make every old finish harmless; removed coating becomes part of the debris and hazard plan.

Undercoating may require staged scraping or test blasting. Agree whether the scope is complete removal, specified faces or a decision-making test area. Cleaning a box rail's exterior does not reach its internal coating.

Directing abrasive through one drain hole cannot guarantee uniform cleaning around bends or behind internal brackets.

Define three categories on the scope:

  1. Directly accessible surfaces: exterior faces and open channels the operator can see and reach at a controlled angle.
  2. Limited-access surfaces: recesses, overlaps and openings where some cleaning is possible but inspection and profile may be incomplete.
  3. Inaccessible cavities: closed sections that are excluded from the blast standard unless opened through an approved repair procedure.

This prevents a freshly coated exterior from being presented as “all rust removed.” Internal corrosion may require borescope assessment, panel opening, replacement, drainage correction or a planned cavity treatment. Cutting access holes without OEM or engineering direction is not routine blasting.

After preparation, photograph open ends, drain points and the edges of boxed areas. The coating provider can then decide how primer, seam protection or cavity material will be applied without assuming a condition it cannot see.

Inspect exposed steel before repair and final preparation

Once coating and scale are gone, pause. Good light, clean dry metal and a location map let the owner or qualified repairer review pitting, cracking, stretched holes, distorted flanges, thin edges and previous welds. Areas that seemed cosmetic may reveal section loss; other dramatic-looking patches may clean to usable steel.

Blasting does not establish remaining thickness, alignment, material grade, weld quality or fatigue condition. Those questions may require measurement, non-destructive testing or manufacturer procedures beyond Evolve's scope. An even-looking surface is not automatically acceptable.
